They were two people who were giving us the vocabulary for discussing what a better society might look like. We are in desperate need of such a vocabulary.
In the UK since 1979 our political vocabulary has made us rationalise greed, Yes, Blair tried to disguise things by the use of words such as ‘modernisation’ and ‘progress’ and ‘aspiration’ and the disgraceful deforming of ‘reforming’. But he was always Thatcher’s favourite son.
Sanders and Corbyn gave us permission to think good thoughts; to imagine a better society; to feel more confident in arguments; and, perhaps, to have a go at taking some action.
Right now is not the time for the UK Labour Party to be led by someone in favour of genocide, apartheid, land theft and falsified history.
And I remember that as Vice President to Obama Joe Biden was right at the top of a government that broke records for killing innocent people in other counties. Only in the USA would the Democratic Party be considered even remotely left-wing.
We ought not to have needed the virus to make us realise just how destructive capitalism is. If/when we recover from it our people with power shall not devote their energies to creating a fair and equal society. It is not putting the people on their feet that matters to them.
Capitalism must be restored in all its gory glory.
