‘Proud Scouser’ Liverpool Walton Labour MP Dan Carden has resigned from his front bench seat in protest at Starmer’s instruction to once again abstain on the highly contentious Tory ‘spycops’ bill.
If the bill becomes law any undercover intelligence source – including informers – can be given the legal right to commit any crime.
The trades unions and left groups expect it be extensively used against them and only Labour opposition has come from left MPs led by Jeremy Corbyn.
Dan, 34, is the son of an NHS worker mum and a docks’ shop steward dad who was sacked for refusing to cross a picket line is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group of left Labour MPs.
He is the first member of the Starmer team to resign rather than be sacked for defying Starmer’s voting instructions.
Tweeting his resignation letter Dan wrote: As a matter of conscience, I must vote against the Covert Human Intelligence Sources (Criminal Conduct)’ Bill (spycops) tonight.
And in a statement he said: “As a Liverpool MP and trade unionist, I share the deep concerns about this legislation from across the labour movement, human rights organisations, and so many who have suffered the abuse of state power, from blacklisted workers to the Hillsborough families and survivors.”
