A right-wing candidate for the Labour Party’s top body Tweeted that the resignation from the party of a Somali-born woman and former mayor was “Excellent news.”
Challenged about his comment Cllr Terry Paul, of Newham, East London, said that he’d ‘misread’ a headline about Cllr Rakhia Ismail’s resignation.
Asked to explain what he had thought he had read he failed to explain, but his Tweet has now been deleted.
Rakhia Ismail, a former Mayor of Islington, London, tweeted news of her decision, along with a description of what she described as oppression and discrimination by fellow Labour councillors
Asked by Skwawkbox to comment and whether it affected his fitness to stand for Labour’s National Executive Committee. He said:
[Ismail’s tweet] was sent to me by a Somali councillor who often sends me positive stories about the Somali community. I naturally retweet her tweets to get a wider audience. Re this tweet it was early and I should have looked closely at this tweet. If I had read the tweet properly I would not have made that comment.
Cllr Terry Paul
- MP Rebecca Lloyd-Bailey gave the same reason for why she had Tweeted a comment by actress Maxine Peak about the method used to kill George Floyd in the US. She was instantly sacked as shadow education secretary, the last left MP in the shadow cabinet. Source: Skwawkbox
