Today is the anniversary of the MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. The year was 1789. Something else happened a few days later in France.
As we go through turbulent times does anyone smell insurrection or mutiny in the air? The Labour Party appears to have been recaptured by the Blairite Ancien Regime. We often forget that for many years now the regressive PROGRESS GROUP that always flew Blair’s flag has been funded twelve times as much as any other group related to the Labour Party. Who by? Until a few years ago it was mostly Lord Sainsbury. Has he done anything like that before? Yes, he funded the SDP.
If you have enough money or know a potential benefactor wishing to play at politics you can actually buy a party while staying in the background hidden from view. Just ask Nigel Farage how it is done. He would be nowhere without the odd billionaire. The Brexit Party, by the way, is not a party at all. It is a private company calling itself The Brexit Party. Anyone can have a go at this if, that is, you have the dosh.
Today we appear to have two Labour Parties. There is a vast membership that joined up because of Corbyn. They are not revolutionaries. They simply believe that it is possible to live in a decent and fair society. And we have a small but powerful leadership following a supporter of apartheid, land theft, torture, genocide and the falsification of history; someone very unlikely to man the barricades in defence of Assange; but someone who puts Alistair Campbell back into the Labour Party. With Starmer as leader Blair can rest assured that the Party will brush his war crimes under the carpet.
Meanwhile, the Tory Party can relax, the boss is back. No more will a succession of unconfident liars have to stand in front of the cameras to explain why yesterday’s target was not a real target, it was merely an aspirational target. Now the liar-in-chief is back. no-one is better than him at explaining that sexism, racism and classism should be seen as mere banter.
Capitalists are, however, coming to realise how much they depend upon a well-organised government. Today’s Tories are not like that. They are truly set upon giving us what Marx said they would give us: chaos. First it was Brexit chaos and now it is virus chaos.
Starmer hopes that with the prefix SIR and the suffix QC the voters will place their crosses where they expect to find calm, restful mediocrity.
It looks like it is Pitcairn Island for the Corbynistas, for now!
