REMEMBERING THE PETERLOO MASSACRE
PETERLOO REMEMBERED

People gathered in St Peters Square, Manchester to remember those who died on that terrible day of 16th August 1819.

There were banners and placards of different sizes being held in Piccadilly Gardens, in preparation to march to St Peters Square. Led by people from THE WORD newspaper and followed by the PCS band and many more.

103 years ago in St Peters field, Manchester, people marched in from far and wide to hear Henry Hunt speak about political reform. This was meant to be a peaceful meeting, they even brought their children, many of the women dressed in white, the sign of peace, and all were dressed in their Sunday best.
This did not happen. On the instructions of the magistrates, the cavalry charged on horse back into the people, their sabres raised, killing at least 18 men women and children. The youngest being just 2 years old. The people were trapped unable to escape. Many other people were severely injured.
There were a number of great speakers including Ken Loach, Jeremy Corbyn, Dave Nellist, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Ian Hodson and Stella Assange. There were also some wonderful musicians including Clare Mooney, Jo So and Gerry O’ Gorman.
Stella spoke with passion about her husband Julian Assange and what he is going through.

People wanting innocent Julian Assange to be freed. The sight of thousands of people all holding up the Free Julian Assange, must surely make the powers that be think again about what they are doing to an innocent man.
