Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford is famously promoting the need to provide free school meals for more than one million children during the winter holidays or many of them will go hungry.
Unmoved, 322 Tory MPs voted down the move in the Commons on Wednesday. Mansfield Tory MP Ben Bradley, who calls himself “first blue brick in the red wall” tweeted why:

Richard Burgon responded: This Tory MP claims providing free school meals in the school holidays “increases dependency”. In order to promote some bizarre ideological views about the state, he seems happy for kids to go to bed hungry each night.
Other Tweeters pointed out that the Government happily spent £50m as a money-off meal out promotion but won’t spend £20m to keep thousands of children fed during the winter school holidays as their parents struggle to make ends meet under Coronavirus conditions.
Channel 4 Dispatches revealed that almost one in every three children is now growing up poor.
A total of 322 Tory MPs voted down the move to provide the free school meals. Conservative MP Brendan Clarke-Smith, Bassetlaw, was openly derisive of the footballer’s intervention: “I do not believe in nationalising children.”
