In their infinite wisdom Highways England have decided to increase the speed limit from 50mph to 60mph on stretches of Motorway where there are roadwork’s taking place. Apparently this is to ease people’s frustration at the delays and to increase traffic flow.
Many of the road works are being caused by the introduction of ‘Smart’ Motorways, whereby they take away the hard shoulder that you go onto when you break down, to use as an extra lane, they then rely on cameras noticing you have STOPPED in amongst speeding cars and then putting up electronic signs to warn other drivers.
The dangers I can see here are:
- What if a warning sign is not put up in time if at all? The chances are other cars may go into you, causing death or serious injury to all involved. (this has already happened)
- If there is no hard shoulder you will not be able to escape from your car and imagine that, if it is on fire and you have your whole family with you. Frightening!
- Imagine if you lose all your car lights at night on the motorway, especially where they have got rid of the motorway lights (Which has happened to me before). Then motorists will not see you and I doubt the cameras will either. So in reality a major accident in the making.
- With increasing the speed limit on motorways where there are road works, this will make it more likely that accidents will happen involving the people working there. The drivers’ ability to react quickly enough and stop in time to avoid the workers will become more difficult at an increased speed. An accident waiting to happen.
So I therefore ask, is it really worth risking people’s lives just so you get an extra lane or get to your destination that bit quicker?
