Minutes after the polls closed it was revealed that Keith Starmer had refused to sign Unite’s call to end the fire and rehire abuse of workers.
That Starmer has once again turned on the working class is to be expected, the shock is that the news was deliberately withheld from socialists and trade unionists until after the polls had closed.
Left favourite for the Unite general secretary Howard Becket revealed he had deliberately held back the news but gave no explanation or justification for keeping it secret.
Clearly he did it aid the Starmer party, yet in his revealing tweet says: “It says so much. Disgraceful.” adding: Sow some passion. Talk for workers. It’s pathetic”
Some socialists have called on Beckett to explain his actions, comparing his alleged breach of trust with his supporters to the secret deal between Corbyn and Len McCluskey to pull the all-important Unite support at conference for automatic selection meetings for sitting MPs.
Everyone knew that if successful this would have, at a stroke, rid the party of many if not all Blairite MPs and members. Losing the vote proved fatal for the left enabling the right to hold on to power, remove leading left voices and again rule the roost.
Failing to support workers is a Starmer trademark, starting with the education unions when Covid was at its height. Only last month a motion calling for a 15% pay increase for NHS workers was supported by 24 left Labour MPs, but not a single Starmer careerist.
Skwawkbox, the left-wing information service which has, and still, fully supports Beckett election bid, released Beckett’s news but did not challenge him why he had held back such crucial information until after the polls closed.
In either kowtowing to the Starmer right, or just doing them a favour, is to repeat the mistakes Corbyn made time after time, even as his strongest supporters were picked off and thrown out. Are we going to see a rerun of the Corbyn disaster but within Unite?
