I can’t. But it is still with us. And I am not sure that it has changed so much either. What, perhaps, has happened is that it has lost its ordinariness. Now it has spectacular champions of greed such as Musk shouting in our ears that the man who was recently assassinated was totally in the right to profit from the ill health and deaths of sick people because profit comes before anything.
In the U.K. our politicians use the word ‘growth’ when they mean ‘greed’. You think Liz Truss was exceptional? I don’t. She was merely more honest than Cameron, Sunak and Reeves, with whom she shares the same university degree, when she said that the priority was to make the rich richer and then some coins just might trickle down to the poor, who would, of course, spend them making the rich even richer.
I take the point of Varufakis that key to modern capitalism is our use of mobile phones because then the likes of Amazon pick up on the things we wish to spend our money on, but key to how we live are our social values. Are they selfish or unselfish?
During the time of Cameron the biggest donor to the Tory Party was JC Bamford. As Israel demolishes the homes of innocent people they often use bulldozers they have purchased from him. Cameron put him in the House of Lords for services to …… charity!
Musk is not the only example of a filthy rich capitalist who is injecting himself into government and politics. If you vote for Farrago, financed by such people, you will be reinforcing the power of our exploiters (another name for capitalists) to shape society as it suits them.
What can we do?
Today I think I shall start by fantasising that I am in Paris, 1789.
