THIS has been the unasked question since Starmer expelled former leader Jeremy Corbyn from the Parliamentary Labour Party, if not before.
The well know socialist friendly Telegraph carried the weakest of stories claiming Corbyn “could” start his own party. Not a shred of actual evidence was offered in support of this invention, but it has caused a slight stir within the left.
Corbyn has always stood by the party and urged everyone to stay and fight, and still does. Yet everyone knows that the party will take whatever measure necessary to prevent him from standing as parliamentary candidate in the next general election, much as it did with Ken Livingstone under Tony Blair.
The stay and fight position has become increasingly threadbare since general secretary David Evans banned members from even discussing Corbyn’s expulsion.
The leadership began by snubbing conference resolutions, such as its overwhelming supported for Boycott, Disinvest and Sanctions (BDS) which very much reflected the leadership’s pro-Zionist position, allowed the Right wing regional bureaucrats to gerrymander elections, expel chairs, secretaries, and councillors who failed to do as they were ordered and closed left constituency parties.
Other than ridding itself of the “wrong kind of Jew” – more often than not leaders and members of the left Jewish Voice for Labour – the so-called ‘great evil’ of anti-semitism which played such a pivotal role in bringing down Corbyn has gone cold.
If Corbyn finally saw the writing on the wall and took decisive action (you never know) how would it go down with the left is the topic for discussion at this Sunday’s zoom meeting of Not the Andrew Marr Show
Corbyn’s two closest friends, Diane Abbott and John McDonnell, have reportedly made it clear that if he leaves and starts a socialist party he’ll do it without their support. How many of the spineless Socialist Campaign Group MPs would do the same. Not a single one has shown Corbyn solidarity and joined him exile.
