Whatever happened to Labour Friends of Palestine?
Self-declared Zionist and opponent of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign (BDS), Lisa Nandy, is to the surprise of many on the Left, the chair of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East.
Starmer’s new shadow Foreign Secretary, Corbyn critic, supporter of the ongoing Witch-Hunt and one-time agent for leadership challenger Owen Smith (who?) took over the chair of LFP in 2018.
According to Wikipedia the LFPME “supports a viable two-state solution that delivers justice and freedom for the Palestinian people as called for by the overwhelming international consensus and enshrined under international law and in UN resolutions.”[1]
She also pledges that as more than half (in 2019 ) Labour MPs were members of the LFPME (including other fellow Zionists such as Sir Keir Starmer) the “strength of our solidarity is more important to the Palestinian people than ever.”
She ends by saying that “now is the time do more.” Adding: “We cannot afford to fail.” That was December 2018.
To get an idea of its activity since a glance at its website is not encouraging. The most up to date Parliamentary activity mentioned was in 2017. It’s most recent updated news item was winning a party award in December 2018. Accepting the trophy Nandy declared: “We will redouble our efforts to achieve peace and a two state solution.”
No friend of the Labour left Nandy did succeed in attracting financial help for her 2017 election campaign from two Remaineer LibDems politicians and a Brexiteer Tory businessman. Between them they handed her a total of £12,000 or just under half her £25,000 election fighting fund!
