Sunday saw the hopes and dreams of a nation dashed once again as just like in the last world cup semi final England raced into an early lead, shocked themselves then went on to the back foot. All too late did Gareth Southgate bring on Jack Grealish. The over emphasis on playing two defensive midfield players finally came unstuck. Pundits have been heaping praise on the England manager like a new Messiah yet with the best set of attacking running with the ball type players this country has ever had, England came up short.
Only near the end of the last period of extra time did Southgate let them free to play. The new game of kick Grealish -played by all our opponents in the European championships – was taken to another level by the Italians. Free kicks piled on yellow cards as the Villa player simply kept making things happen. With 6 substitutions available in extra time it was a surprise Southgate did not rest tired legs earlier and bring on the flair players.
The resilience of Italy has to be admired as they recovered well from the best move of the match which saw Luke Shaw half volley in from the best move of the match. England then gradually reverted to their old lack of confidence type. They dropped so deep they were probably next to the wreck of the Titanic. With all their attacking flair England still lack a poacher type goal scorer. The Italians patience finally paid off with an inevitable equalizer.
In the end the difference was the Rashford penalty that hit the post and the bizarre decision to allow the 19 year old Saka to take the deciding penalty. Let us all hope that does not blight his career.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, ticket less England fans broke into Wembley. Hardly surprising as the working class are priced and privileged out of watching football. Useless politicians and suited up Royals watch on in comfort as real supporters were barred from, maybe, the only enjoyment and hope in their lives. The billionaires who own our MSM will print their usual claptrap branding the whole working class as racist thugs. It is time we move from football to the real battle.
