Big Mouth MP David Lammy, one time friend of former leader Jeremy Corbyn MP, this week accused him of parroting Russian president Vladimir Putin.
This is not the first time Lammy has made outrageous accusations. During the Brexit referendum the MP for Tottenham, a zealous Remainer, said comparing Tory Brexiteer MPs to Nazis “was not strong enough.”
Corbyn was one of a dozen MPs on the left who signed a Stop the War petition that condemns Russia and Nato for their conduct. Doing that was too much for Lamy and his boss Keir Starmer.
Starmer immediately threatened the 11 Labour MPs that if they did not withdraw their support they would lose the party Whip ruining their political careers and leaving them sitting as Independent MPs alongside Jeremy Corbyn.
Corbyn stuck to his guns but the others, all from the ‘left wing’ Socialist Campaign Group within the Parliamentary Labour Party, immediately complied. These craven MPs included John McDonnell, Diana Abbott and Richard Burgon. Now the right is once again out for Corbyn.
The Socialist Campaign Group of around 30 MPs selected Jeremy Corbyn as its candidate for the 2015 party leadership race. Surprisingly its 2019 leadership candidate, Rebecca Long Bailey, was not among the 11 supporting the Stop the War petition. Nor was vocal left MP Jon Trickett.
The group was formed in 1982 when Neil Kinnock successfully split the left Tribune group over his refusal to support Tony Benn in the election of deputy leader against the eventual winner, right wing Dennis Healey.
