With many dedicated Labour members struggling to remain paid members after the election of Keir Starmer as the new leader ( I have spoken to many of them), I submit to you my resignation letter! That’s it my membership will now be to a dedicated Socialist party.
I have sat and waited after the tragic loss of the 2019 UK elections to the truth bending Tory party; sat and waited to see who will make up the next leadership, and to my disappointment it was not a Socialist.
So here I submit to you no longer will my coin go to my old beloved party with Corbyn at the helm, my dedicated membership will go to a place where I can openly discuss the benefits of working towards a Socialist society.
My Letter
There are lots of reason’s why Labour lost the 2019 general election, people of course all have there different opinions on why that is the case. Whether it be Brexit, the media, the right of the party or the leadership. One thing that is clear however is the socialist policies in which the Labour party stood on was well received, if you take a look at the Yougov polling before the general election it shows that the polices in the Labour parties manifesto were in fact pretty popular (see link below). It shows that his policies including nationalisation of railways, water, gas and electricity were all favoured as well as increasing the tax rate for the rich and giving workers places on company boards.
It is important that Labour keeps up these polices as it is obviously clear that they are policies that the British public like, however with Labour’s clear move to the right, under Keir Starmer’s leadership it would be hard to see them keeping a lot of these polices as they try to move to the centre. This leads to worrying times for Labour with the surge of popularity towards Boris Johnson’s Conservative party, as latest polls are putting them above 50%, Labour need to have polices in place that represent the views of the British people especially the working class.
The bullying of left wing MP’s from members of the chief staff of the Labour party in a 860 page report is quite frankly diabolical and unsurprisingly media coverage of the report has gone pretty much unnoticed especially about the treatment of certain MP’s such as Diane Abbott
This is why I have made the decision to join the Socialist Party, I wouldn’t say that it is time for the left of Labour to split up and form a new party but the Socialist Party can and will make a key role in putting pressure on the Labour right to try and make sure Labour don’t go back to the old neo-liberal days.
The Socialist Party could become a real force in the years ahead as it battles for socialism and not neo-liberalism. We need to protect our working class and stop public cuts to our vital services, this neo-liberal leadership that the labour party is now forming represents no true opposition just the odd sound bites. With a weak manifesto that offers little support for the working British people, public services and our community the Labour party could be in opposition for decades to come. Finally even though I didn’t want to mention Brexit we can’t ignore the fact that it was Keir Starmer who put forward the unpopular 2nd referendum Brexit policy in the 2019 Labour manifesto and Starmer still hasn’t ruled out supporting another referendum in the years to come. Lots of the working class that would normally vote Labour could not simply due to this Brexit policy.
The socialist party are much more in touch with the working class and could become the true voice of opposition and that is why I signed up. Time will tell.
