Dear Prime Minister,
I have not yet received your letter. I hope you did not lick the envelope.
I believe that in the letter you praise to the sky our NHS. It is good to see you doing so. But your praise puzzles me. From 2010 your party did all that it could to diminish the NHS; to starve it of funding; to reduce support for trainee nurses; to sell off crucial parts of it; and to hand over public money to the likes of Carillion when they failed to build the hospitals they were contracted to build.
The efficiency of the NHS is heavily dependent upon its relationship to the network provided by the Welfare State. Poor social services have a negative impact upon health. This obvious fact was brushed to side by every Conservative-led administration since 2010.
I appreciate your concern for the economy and I am glad to see our Chancellor of the Exchequer now not only adopting the spending targets of the last Labour Party Manifesto but even exceeding them. I suggest, however, that instead of doing this in a confusing, piecemeal manner why not either place everyone on a living wage or vastly increase the amount of income tax paid by the rich. That would cover the cost of so much.
During WWII the top rate of income tax was £19/6 in the pound. It was paid but do you believe that the super rich of today, the funders of the Tory Party, have the same patriotic pockets as their grandfathers did? Perhaps you doubt their enthusiasm for equality.
You do know about the masses of research demonstrating that equal societies are both happier and healthier? If not I shall be happy to send you a list of books to read.
Finally, as an expert on Ancient Greece I am sure that you are aware of the original meaning of the word ‘economy’. It refers to the welfare of the household. If you see the UK as a household then it must be intolerable for you to know that some members of that household are profiting from the illness and misfortune of other members of the household. What are you intending to do about the profiteers?
